The Fa'afafine Rural Program

In 2021, the Alliance received funding from the Office of Violence against Women (OVW) to develop a data informed plan to train community-based fa'afafine advocates and build a supporting infrastructure.  Since then, this project continues to develop programs, initiatives, physical spaces, online & in-person resources that are made available for fa'afafine advocates and community learners. These resources are designed to train advocates to be liaisons of the program into the public, to educate our community on the issues that impact local fa'afafine, and ways we can improve the lives of the fa'afafine, fa'atane, SOGIE, MVBPFAFF & LGBTQIA+ people in American Samoa. 

Our Logic Model:


​The Alliance Logic Model is a guide for the work we do as an anti-violence organization. Our guiding pillars are Alofa (love), Aiga (family), Tautua (service) and Fa'aaloalo (respect) - foundational aspects of the Samoan culture and way of life. The Fa'afafine Rural Program adds one more pillar to the Alliance Logic Model - Fa'asinomaga (Identity). 

The Fa'afafine Advocates Training Curriculum:

The Fa'afafine Advocates initiative offers a part-time position to three fa'afafine individuals to act as liaisons of the Fa'afafine Rural Program into the broader community, joined & supported by Executive members of the SOFIAS organization and ASADSV board members who are fa'afafine. They will be advocates for fa'afafine and SOGIE individuals from their respective zones - east, central and west. These advocates have undergone a mandatory 30-hour training to equip them with the tools necessary for recognizing violence against fa'afafine in its various forms, how to manage different cases as they are presented to them, who to access for aid, and healing practices they can use to empower victims of DVSA. The online curriculum below is the manual that was used to train these advocates that is now made available for anyone to access.
